Holiday Overview

From Pacific rainforest to cloud forest, coffee country and the Caribbean

This route shows a quieter, wilder side of Costa Rica. It begins with the wildlife and beaches of Manuel Antonio, then heads to remote Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula, where three nights give you time for both Corcovado National Park and snorkelling at Caño Island.

From the Pacific, the journey climbs into the cool highlands of San Gerardo de Dota for an early morning search for the Resplendent Quetzal, before crossing Turrialba's coffee country to the relaxed southern Caribbean coast. Most stops are two or three nights, so the pace stays comfortable throughout.

The itinerary works equally well with private transfers or a 4x4 hire car, depending on whether you would rather be driven or take the wheel yourself. It also pairs well with parts of our Northern Costa Rica itinerary, and like all our holidays in Costa Rica, it can be tailored to suit you.

Costa Rica's Southern Wilderness: Osa, Quetzals and the Caribbean Coast includes:

  • Return flights from the UK
  • Private road transfers between stops, or a 4x4 hire car with full insurance if you prefer to drive
  • Scheduled boat transfers between Sierpe and Drake Bay
  • 13 nights in selected hotels and lodges. Daily breakfast, with full board in Drake Bay
  • Manuel Antonio National Park guided tour
  • Sirena Station excursion in Corcovado National Park
  • Caño Island snorkelling trip
  • Guided Quetzal Quest in San Gerardo de Dota
  • A Taste of Aquiares coffee experience with guided tasting

Today's guided tour of Manuel Antonio National Park includes return transport, park entrance and a full meal afterwards. A certified naturalist guide leads you along forest trails at an easy pace, stopping often to look for monkeys, sloths, tropical birds and other wildlife. Having a guide's trained eye makes a real difference here, as much of the wildlife is easy to miss. Time on one of the park's beaches rounds off the visit.

Day 8 - Quetzal Quest

We've included San Gerardo de Dota for one reason above all: the Savegre Valley is one of the most reliable places in Costa Rica to see the Resplendent Quetzal, thanks to cloud forest habitat all year and plenty of wild avocado trees. Your outing with a local guide begins around dawn, when bird activity is at its best, though sightings can never be guaranteed. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the valley.

Overnight San Gerardo de Dota.

Staying at Trogón Lodge

Day 9 - San Gerardo de Dota to Turrialba

Leaving the cloud forest, you'll cross the Central Highlands to Turrialba, around two and a half hours away. The landscape changes again as you arrive in one of Costa Rica's historic coffee regions, with views of farms, rainforest and the slopes of Turrialba Volcano.

Overnight Turrialba.

This guided experience of around two hours follows coffee from seed to cup, covering how it is grown, processed and roasted, along with the history of the local community and its church. It finishes with a guided tasting, and entrance to the farm and mill is included.

Overnight Turrialba.

11

Day 11 - Turrialba to Puerto Viejo

Head east into the Caribbean lowlands, then follow the coast south to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, around three hours in all. Your lodge is set in tropical forest close to Playa Chiquita, with easy access to the beach.
