Shawandha sits in five acres of tropical forest on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, close to Puerto Viejo, and the trees are as much a part of the place as the buildings. A huge ceiba towers over the grounds. More than a hundred species of birds have been recorded here, among over two hundred types of plants. Fourteen chalets and six tepees are tucked among the greenery, built from hardwood, bamboo and palm so they blend into the forest rather than stand out against it.

A private path leads 150 metres through the trees to Playa Chiquita, a quiet stretch of white sand and clear water that holds Blue Flag status for its clean, well cared for coastline. Back at the lodge there are two swimming pools, one with waterfalls in the middle of a lush tropical garden. The restaurant is the heart of the lodge and is open all day. Breakfast is a highlight, with sweet and savoury dishes that mix local and international flavours. Later there are salads, pasta, fish, pizza and burgers, plus vegetarian and vegan choices and homemade puddings. Days can be spent on adventure sports and forest walks, or simply between the beach and the pool. Puerto Viejo, with its laid back Caribbean bars and cafés, is just six kilometres down the road.
