Coffee has been grown on the slopes of Turrialba Volcano at Aquiares since 1890, and today it's the largest coffee estate in Costa Rica. Guests stay at Hacienda La Esperanza, a villa that's over a hundred years old, set in two acres of lush garden. Outside the gates, rows of coffee grow in the shade of tall trees and huge ceibas, with streams running between them. The estate covers 600 hectares of coffee, and alongside it is a further 200 hectares of protected rainforest, home to more than 130 species of birds.

Life here follows the coffee, from the plant to the cup. Tours explain how the beans are picked, processed and roasted on site, and end with a tasting of the estate's own coffees, including small speciality lots. On horseback you can explore some of the 60 kilometres of farm tracks that wind across the hillsides, or walk down to a 30 metre waterfall in the forest. Meals are made with produce from the land around you. Aquiares was the first coffee farm to become carbon neutral and holds Rainforest Alliance certification, but above all it's a chance to stay on a working estate with deep roots in this valley.
