High in the Talamanca mountains, the Savegre River runs fast and clear through the valley at San Gerardo de Dota, and Trogón Lodge sits right beside it, with the sound of the water always in the background. It feels a world away from San José, even though the capital is less than 90 kilometres away. The lodge has twenty five rooms in total. Twenty four standard rooms are split between twelve small cabins set among the gardens, two rooms to each, and there is a single superior room. Mist often hangs over the cloud forest on the hills around the lodge, and the evenings are cool and quiet.

The reason most people come here is the resplendent quetzal, with its emerald green feathers and long, trailing tail. It's one of the most sought after birds in the Americas, and this valley is among the best places to see one. Guided walks set out early to look for quetzals, and other trails head into the forest near Los Quetzales National Park. Hummingbirds are busy around the flowers in the gardens all day long. Back at the lodge, El Quetzal Restaurant serves wholesome, home cooked meals, and the riverbank is the perfect place to sit and do nothing at all.
