Discover more about Canada’s majestic animals and the best tours available. Depending on what’s top of your wish list, there’s something for all animal lovers as you begin your adventure.
One of the grandest and most iconic animals in Canada is the moose. If you want to try to catch a sighting of this gentle giant, then you should plan to head to Central and Eastern Canada. Just a few hours from Toronto, Algonquin Provincial Park offers a great opportunity to spot moose.
Canada is also home to a great variety of wildlife in its mountainous regions such as the Rockies. Elk can be commonly found, so if you’re spending time at one of the many campsites keep your eyes peeled for a special visitor nearby. If you’re travelling along the Icefields Parkway, you will have a good chance to see bighorn sheep. Mountain goats can also be found, but you’ll need to look especially hard to glimpse them.
You’ll be busy keeping your eyes peeled on the ground, but remember to look up to the skies for more superb wildlife sightings. Birdlife in Canada is stunning – there's nothing better than watching a bald eagle spread its wings and soar above you. Several smaller mammals are also at home here, such as chipmunks and squirrels.

Bears are active after they emerge from hibernation from April to November. Polar bears don’t hibernate, and you must head to Churchill, Manitoba, for extraordinary sightings of the world’s largest land-based predator in October and November. The summer months offer the best chance to spot grizzly and black bears. Grizzlies love catching salmon in the Great Bear Rainforest. Black bears thrive in mountainous areas like Banff, Jasper and Whistler as well as Vancouver Island's coast.
For keen whale watchers, May to October is the best time to spot these magnificent creatures, particularly during peak summer. Québec and Nova Scotia are best for humpbacks, minke, blue and beluga whales. But especially for beluga whales, Manitoba’s Hudson Bay is the place to be. Orcas are synonymous with British Columbia and you can aim to spot pods on tours in this spectacular area.

"Knight Inlet Lodge was incredible! We arrived by seaplane, saw grizzlies and whales in the inlet, and black bears on the shore. The guided tours, kayaking, and cosy lodge made it a once-in-a-lifetime trip"
Laura
"Great Bear Lodge blew me away. We took a tremendously scenic floatplane from Port Hardy to the floating lodge, located in a secluded spot in the Great Bear Rainforest. Everything from start to finish left us in awe. The lodge was authentic and cosy with homemade cookies, hot drinks and delicious meals, the staff were friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Spectacular scenery as well as amazing bear sightings of them in their natural habitat."
