Embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime train journey through the Canadian Rockies, I boarded The Canadian from Vancouver to Jasper – a breathtaking overnight rail adventure that’s part of the iconic transcontinental route across Canada. While the full four-day trip continues to Toronto, I was most excited about this first leg through British Columbia into Alberta.

After enjoying a vibrant few days exploring Vancouver’s culture and cuisine, I headed to Pacific Central Station to board my overnight train. VIA Rail’s The Canadian is renowned for its vintage carriages, luxurious service, and panoramic views of Canada’s ever-changing landscape.
Though it had been years since I’d last spent a night on a train, I couldn’t wait to experience sleeping on board while rolling through some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. I packed light with just my carry-on, though I needn’t have worried – each cabin comes with a complimentary amenities kit, including towels, toiletries, and everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Upon boarding, I was warmly greeted by Dion, my fantastic cabin attendant, who showed me to my private room complete with a private toilet and comfortable seating that transforms into a bed at night. He then gave me a tour of the train: the cozy lounge car, the iconic domed observation car, and the elegant dining carriage.
During my 22-hour journey (3pm to around 1pm the next day), I enjoyed several highlights which enhanced this trip. I savoured a delicious three-course dinner with Canadian wine. I spent time in the lounge with snacks and a glass of wine in hand. As we travelled through incredible landscapes, there were fun optional group activities like trivia and wine tasting. I then retired to my cabin where I enjoyed a restful night’s sleep with gentle rocking to lull me. The following morning, I had a rejuvenating hot shower and a hearty breakfast as the Rockies came into view
The scenery from Vancouver to Jasper is nothing short of spectacular. Towering mountains, dense forests, and tranquil lakes appeared one after another as the train meandered its way into the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The observation car was a particular highlight, with its panoramic dome windows offering unmatched views.
Train staff made regular announcements to point out wildlife sightings and noteworthy landmarks. Whether you’re enjoying the privacy of your cabin or mingling with fellow travellers in the lounge, every moment offers something special.
While the Rocky Mountaineer is often top of mind for Canadian rail experiences, The Canadian offers an equally stunning (and overnight) alternative – at a fraction of the cost. With full-service comfort, historic charm, and a slower, more immersive pace, it’s a journey I’d recommend again and again.
Rolling into Jasper the next day felt like arriving in a storybook setting. From here, the adventure continues – exploring Jasper National Park, Maligne Lake, wildlife tours, and further travels through Alberta’s iconic Rocky Mountains.
