Saskatchewan Self Drive Adventure

I started my Saskatchewan adventure in the city of Saskatoon, a vibrant and walkable city, I recommend taking a walk along Saskatoon River. The city is filled with lots of great heritage and bars and restaurants, situated on the riverfront is Remi Modern Art Gallery this is admission by donation and is filled with lots of artwork including work from Picasso.

A must-visit is Wanuskewin Heritage Park, an excellent place to learn about Canada’s First Nations heritage. Here, you can explore exhibits and visit the recently reintroduced bison. Located just a 20-minute drive from Saskatoon, I attended the Han Wi Moon Dinner during my visit, held on full moon nights. This event included a traditional smudge ceremony, guided by Honey, a local First Nations guide who shared insightful information about her culture and heritage. We enjoyed a traditional meal featuring bannock on a stick, bison (with a vegetarian option available), and a sweet dessert, concluding with a cultural dance. This enriching experience provided me with deep insights into the beliefs and way of life of Saskatchewan’s First Nations people.

Next, I traveled to the town of Kyle to visit La Reata Ranch, an authentic cowboy ranch. Greeted warmly by the owner George and his family, I felt like part of the family. We started with horseback riding across the ranch, overlooking a scenic lake. After an afternoon of riding, we gathered with other guests for a hearty family-style meal, sharing adventures and bonding over our experiences.

Continuing my journey, I visited Cypress Hills Provincial Park, an ideal spot for outdoor adventure. Staying at The Resort at Cyprus Hills you are surrounded by lots of beautiful nature amongst the trees and lots of great activities on your doorstep. As you drive into Cyprus Hill Provincial Park you will need to pay park entrance fee, they are not associated with Parks Canada.I enjoyed a Segway tour through the park and an exhilarating ziplining experience.

Adding a historical touch, I visited Fort Walsh National Historic Site. Here, I learned about the Cypress Hills Massacre of the Nakoda people and the establishment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Mounties). The visitor centre offers lots of insightful information of the history of the location. The drive to Fort Walsh is scenic through Conglomerate Cliffs, overlooking the valley you can see the river below and the gentle rolling hills, it was so quiet and peaceful. We had a picnic lunch at the top of the hill and it was the perfect location.

One of the longer drives took me to Moose Jaw, known as Canada’s Most Notorious City. Greeted by Mac the Moose, the city is famous for its connection to Al Capone during Chicago's Prohibition era. I participated in the Chicago Connection tour at the Tunnels of Moose Jaw, where we played the role of 1920s bootleggers. The actors were fantastic and brought the history to life. Moose Jaw also features great artwork, and you can explore it through a self-guided artwork tour of Main Street, with maps available at tourist shops.

My adventure concluded in Regina, the capital city. Regina is famous for being home to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Mounties) training centre. The visitor centre offers interactive exhibits and occasional tours of the training grounds. Regina boasts excellent dining options, and I highly recommend Bar Willow, overlooking Wascana Lake—a perfect spot for a relaxing lunch. Afterwards, enjoy a walk around Wascana Park, where you can visit the Legislative Building and its gardens. A fun family activity is visiting The Royal Saskatchewan Museum, home to Scotty, the world’s largest T-Rex. The museum, operates on a donation basis, features numerous dinosaur fossils and interactive exhibits. Regina is also home to Mosaic Stadium, where the Saskatchewan Roughriders play. I took a guided tour of the stadium, led by enthusiastic fans, which provided great insights into Canadian football.

Overall, Saskatchewan is a hidden gem in Canada, rich in history, stunning scenery, and First Nations heritage. I highly recommend visiting Saskatchewan for an authentic Canadian holiday. And don’t forget to try the famous Saskatoon berries!
