Brisbane, Queensland Holidays

Brisbane, capital of Queensland, is a large city on the Brisbane River. Clustered in its South Bank cultural precinct are the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre, with noted interactive exhibitions. Another South Bank cultural institution is Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, among Australia's major contemporary art museums. Looming over the city is Mt. Coot-tha, site of Brisbane Botanic Gardens.

For shopping, the Queen Street Mall is  in the central business district, and James Street in Fortitude Valley has restaurants and cafes. Further upriver, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary offers visitors the chance to hold koalas and hand-feed kangaroos. Out in Moreton Bay, North Stradbroke Island is home to an Aboriginal settlement, a former convict station and shipwrecks.

Brisbane is home to a number of restaurants and cafes at which chefs emphasise local Queensland produce. In the city centre, Fish Lane is a must visit spot filled with cool bars and resturants and Howard Smith Wharves located under Story Bridge a great place to dine overlooking Brisbane River.

Brisbane's coastline is dotted with idyllic islands. Moreton Island, just a 70-minute ferry ride from Brisbane, is the third largest sand island in the world. Most of the island is national park, creating a blissful paradise of sandy beaches, bush and lagoons. The island is also home to the Tangalooma Wrecks, popular for diving and snorkelling.

North Stradbroke Island is just a 40-minute ferry ride from the coast. There are three villages on the island, fringed by magnificent surf beaches and migrating whales between June and October. Join Straddie Adventures to discover the island's adventure with a cultural twist. Try kayaking or sandboarding through the incredible landscape as Traditional Owners of Quandamooka share their culture.

Travelling around Brisbane couldn’t be easier than hopping on the CityCat ferries that run along the Brisbane River. They offer a fantastic way to see the city from the water while easily reaching many of Brisbane’s key neighbourhoods and attractions. Simply tap on and tap off as you travel, and with fares at just 50 cents per journey, it’s an affordable and scenic way to get around. While you’re on board, keep an eye out for the two CityDog ferries decorated as Bluey and Bingo, celebrating the much-loved children’s TV show Bluey, which was created in Brisbane.

Brisbane is continuing to evolve as it prepares to host the 2032 Olympic Games, making it an exciting time to visit. With new developments, vibrant neighbourhoods and a growing cultural scene, the city offers a dynamic mix of modern attractions and relaxed riverside charm.
