Montezuma moves at its own pace. Tucked into the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, this small village of open air cafés, craft stalls and surf shops sits where the jungle tumbles straight down to the Pacific, with howler monkeys in the almond trees and pelicans gliding low over the waves.

A short walk inland, Montezuma's waterfalls drop into deep, cool pools surrounded by forest, ideal for a swim on a hot afternoon. Along the coast, quiet beaches give way to Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, the country's first protected area, where forest trails end at empty sand. Boats head out to Isla Tortuga for snorkelling in clear water, and evenings bring a gentle crowd to the beach to watch the sun sink into the ocean. It is a place many come to for a few days and find hard to leave.
