Manuel Antonio is where the rainforest runs straight down to the sea. On Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, just south of the fishing town of Quepos, a winding road climbs through green hills dotted with hotels and open air restaurants, each angled towards the ocean. Evenings here belong to the sunset. The sky turns amber, then pink, as the sun drops behind the scattered islets offshore and the calls of howler monkeys echo through the trees.

The national park itself is one of the smallest in the country, yet few places pack in so much life. Trails wind beneath a dense canopy where sloths hang motionless in the branches, capuchin monkeys raid the undergrowth and rare squirrel monkeys move through the treetops in chattering troops. Iguanas bask on warm rocks, toucans flash overhead and coatis nose along the paths. The trails open onto beaches of pale sand and calm, clear water, with Playa Manuel Antonio the loveliest of all, a sheltered crescent framed by forest. Above it rises Punta Catedral, a rocky headland that was once an island, where a lookout trail rewards the climb with sweeping views of jungle, surf and endless blue.
