Scarlet macaws fly over the treetops in pairs, calling loudly as they cross the Cerros de Turrubares, the hills inland from Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast. Macaw Lodge sits in a rare stretch of country where humid rainforest meets tropical dry forest, and the wildlife is all the richer for it. More than 350 bird species have been recorded here. There are just fifteen rooms, eight in the main lodge and seven in separate bungalows nearby. All are furnished in wood and look out across the gardens to the mountains beyond.

The lodge is a working farm as much as a place to stay. Paths lead through fruit orchards and cocoa groves, past waterfalls and down to a lake. Guided walks look at the wildlife and at how the farm feeds the kitchen, with hydroponic crops and produce picked in the gardens each day. The restaurant is small and seats around thirty, so meals feel personal and the food is homemade. Between walks, there are pools and hydrotherapy areas to relax in, and a yoga shala where early morning sessions start to the sound of birds waking in the forest.
