Listen for the macaws. At dawn and dusk, scarlet macaws fly over Carara National Park in raucous pairs, their red, yellow and blue plumage blazing against the sky. This compact park on the Central Pacific coast sits where the dry forests of the north meet the humid rainforests of the south, making it one of the richest areas for wildlife in the country.

Shaded trails wind beneath towering trees, where you may spot trogons, motmots, poison dart frogs and agoutis foraging on the forest floor. Just beyond the park, the Tárcoles River slides slowly towards the sea, and the bridge that crosses it gives a remarkable view of some of the largest American crocodiles in Central America, basking on the mudbanks below. Birdlife thrives in the surrounding mangroves and wetlands too. Close to San José yet rich in nature, Carara offers a peaceful final stop or a rewarding first taste of Costa Rica's wild side.
