USA Driving Guide

We recommend staying one night in your arrival city before picking up your car or motorhome, as driving whilst tired is ill-advised. Your documentation will provide full details on when to pick up your car or motorhome, and where. 

Driving in the USA

It is legal to drive in the USA with a valid UK photocard driving licence. You will be driving on the opposite side of the road from the UK, which does take some getting used to. However, roads are well-signposted and nicely maintained. As in the UK, seatbelts are mandatory and you are required to obey speed limits, take extra care when driving. 

Road signs are written in English and are measured in miles. Each state has their own signage for the types of motorways/highways, so please check with the relevant state(s) you are travelling through. Please be aware in the USA, when you get to a red traffic light, you are allowed to turn right provided there is no oncoming traffic. 

If you are travelling with children, it is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the local car seat/seat booster guidelines. Most airlines do allow you to check a pram and car seat in addition to the child’s hold luggage allowance. Alternatively, you can request the appropriate car seat from your consultant at any time, subject to availability. 

Motorhomes in the USA

Freedom camping is only permitted in a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) site. The Bureau of Land Management allows camping for up to 14 days total within a 28-day period. Please be sure to read all signage in a free camping area regarding any restrictions. Other campgrounds in the USA, including RV parks or National Park campgrounds are plentiful. Many RV parks are centre around major tourist sites. Each US state has their own rules and regulations regarding campgrounds for motorhomes. Please refer to the relevant state(s) before you travel.
