From the dry plains of the Karoo, we made our most scenic drive yet—through mountain passes and into the coastal cliffs of Hermanus. Here, we checked into Grootbos Nature Reserve, a 5-star eco-lodge overlooking the ocean, surrounded by 3,500 hectares of indigenous fynbos and forest.
This was a different kind of South African safari—focused on botany, marine life, and sustainability. Activities included botanical 4x4 drives, horse riding, and even seasonal whale watching. We ended each day with a glass of local wine and panoramic views from our private deck.
No South Africa itinerary is complete without a visit to the Western Cape’s Winelands. We took the scenic route via the Franschhoek Pass, which offered spectacular views and endless photo opportunities.
Our base was Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch, a working wine estate with over 330 years of history. Daily wine tastings, vineyard walks, and delicious dining made this the perfect place to unwind before heading to the city.
We wrapped up our South Africa tour in Cape Town, a city that never fails to impress. From the towering Table Mountain to the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood and bustling V&A Waterfront, there’s something for everyone.
We stayed at two very different but equally enjoyable hotels: The President Hotel in Bantry Bay, which offered resort-style amenities, and the charming Winchester Boutique Hotel, with its 1920s architecture and ideal location for sunset cocktails.
A ferry ride to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, added depth to our visit and served as a powerful reminder of South Africa’s complex history.
This trip reminded us why South Africa is one of the best long-haul holidays from the UK. It offers luxury safaris, scenic drives, award-winning wine, and incredible value for money. The hospitality is warm, the landscapes are jaw-dropping, and the diversity of experiences is second to none.
Whether you're planning a South Africa honeymoon, a family wildlife adventure, or a Garden Route road trip, this country truly has it all.
