I started my trip in New York City, spending two nights soaking up the energy of “the city that never sleeps.” Flying into Newark Airport, I found it easy to get into Manhattan just $16 and 30 minutes on the direct train to Penn Station.
Among the many NYC observation decks, I chose the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Centre, and it didn’t disappoint. The morning light was perfect for photos, and with fewer crowds, I had unobstructed views of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Central Park, and even the Statue of Liberty in the distance. My tip: go early for the best experience!
Afterwards, I wandered through a peaceful Times Square a surprisingly good time to visit is in the morning. I then took the Circle Line Landmarks Cruise, a 90-minute guided boat tour that passed under the Brooklyn Bridge and circled the Statue of Liberty for stunning photo ops. The guide was full of fun NYC trivia and history.
That afternoon, I visited the Museum of Broadway, an immersive and interactive journey through the world of musical theatre. From backstage beginnings to costume displays from shows like Wicked, Hamilton, and West Side Story, it was a treat for any theatre fan. I followed my visit to the museum with a Broadway show—tip: book in advance to secure great seats!
Leaving the city, I boarded an Amtrak train to Syracuse, riding in Business Class a comfortable option with reclining seats, footrests, power outlets, and onboard snacks. The journey took about five hours, with a short stop in Albany for fresh air. Wi-Fi and mobile signal were limited, so I’d recommend downloading podcasts or movies before departure.
In Syracuse, I visited the Erie Canal Museum, learning about the canal’s pivotal role in American trade especially relevant as it celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2025. For lunch, I explored the diverse food options at Salt City Market. I also took a short trip to Skaneateles Lake, where I enjoyed a peaceful boat ride through the Finger Lakes’ serene scenery.
Did you know? The Shubert Brothers, founders of Broadway’s famous Shubert Theatre, hailed from Syracuse an unexpected link back to New York City’s theatre district!
Next stop: Watkins Glen International Raceway, where I rode a pace car around a NASCAR track at 100mph a total adrenaline rush! In Rochester, I explored The Strong National Museum of Play, home to the world’s largest toy and game collection. From retro video games to a nostalgic Barbie exhibit, it’s ideal for kids and adults alike.
I also visited the George Eastman Museum, the founder of Kodak, touring his home and learning about the history of photography. Another favourite moment was a canal boat ride on the Erie Canal with Sam Patch Tours, where the guide shared stories (and songs!) about the historic "marriage of the waters."
Arriving in Niagara Falls, New York, I experienced the nighttime illuminations of the falls and caught a 10pm fireworks show a magical introduction. At the Niagara Falls Visitor Centre, I learned about the early environmental movement that led to the area becoming America’s first state park.
In the morning, I boarded the iconic Maid of the Mist in my stylish blue poncho. We cruised past the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls before getting drenched near the powerful Horseshoe Falls. Next, I walked the Cave of the Winds boardwalks, getting up close to the falls on the Hurricane Deck a thrilling and refreshing experience!
For lunch, I visited Cambria Hotel, famous as the filming location of Pam & Jim’s wedding from The Office a fun stop for fans.
I concluded the U.S. leg of my journey in Buffalo, where I visited the AKG Art Gallery and the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Martin House, both architectural and cultural gems.
From Buffalo, I took the Amtrak Maple Leaf train to Niagara Falls, Ontario. Upon arrival, all passengers disembarked to pass through Canadian customs a fast and smooth process. I stayed at the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel, where I had a stunning view of the American Falls right from my room.
I loved experiencing Niagara Falls from both the U.S. and Canadian sides. The American side is quieter, more natural with scenic trails and fewer commercial attractions. On the Canadian side, especially around Clifton Hill, there’s more buzz and better panoramic views of all three waterfalls. Both sides of Niagara Falls provide a unforgettable experience!
From Niagara Falls, I hopped on a coach transfer to Toronto. Our friendly driver got us to the city quickly, and I jumped on the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour for a great intro to Toronto landmarks like St. Lawrence Market, Hockey Hall of Fame, and the CN Tower.
I ended my journey with a Toronto Harbour Cruise, admiring the beautiful skyline from the water. It was the perfect finale to an unforgettable rail trip.
For my flight home, I used UP Express from Union Station to Toronto Pearson Airport a smooth, reliable journey for just $12.
This New York to Toronto rail journey was more than just a method of travel it was an immersive experience. From world-famous cities to quiet lakeside towns, historical sites to natural wonders, every stop had a story. If you're looking for a scenic, cultural, and unique way to travel between the USA and Canada, I can’t recommend this itinerary enough.
