Chiang Saen is a quiet river town on the mighty Mekong River. It is the home of a previous kingdom that is believed to date back to the 7th century. Dotted through Chiang Saen are the ruins of this empire, including several Buddha stupas.

Chiang Saen later became associated with various Northern Thai kingdoms, as well as 18th-century Myanmar but did not become a part of Thailand until the 1880s.
Today, river barges from Yunnan Province in China still stop at Chiang Saen, carrying various products that keep the centuries old China – Siam trade route open. Yet the trade has resulted in few changes to the town and Chiang Saen making it a perfect base from which to visit the Golden triangle.
