Anuradhapura

The ruins of Anuradhapura are a unique Sri Lankan experience and offer an illustrative insight into one of its former kingdoms. The widespread complex contains a plethora of archaeological and architectural wonders, including impressive dagobas (basically a brick stupas), ancient pools and disintegrating temples, constructed at various stages during Anuradhapura’s 1000 years of rule over Sri Lanka. Today, several of the sites remain in use as holy places and temples giving the feel of a living museum.

Anuradhapura was the centre of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries. Situated just over 120 miles north of the current capital of Colombo within the North Central Province, on the banks of the historic Malvathu River. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of the eight UESCO World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka.
