To the north of Durban, you’ll find Umhlanga, a Zulu word for “Place of Reeds”. With its beautiful clear blue seas and amazing all-year-round weather, it’s a tourist, residential and commercial paradise. This upmarket suburb has a vibey nightlife with restaurants and bars, and one of the largest shopping centres in the country: the Gateway Theatre of Shopping.

Highly recommended is the scenic Umhlanga Promenade, a three-kilometre paved walkway along the beach, taking you to the iconic lighthouse to the right, and to the left, where this walk ends, the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Trail begins. This nature trails meanders through beautiful coastal forest on boardwalks right to the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. It’s also popular to walk along the “Umhlanga Rocks” and observe the sea life in the rocks’ pools, or go surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching or dolphin viewing. Just inland from Umhlanga, endless sugarcane fields await.
