Quiet and understated, it suits couples and friends who would rather watch the river than queue for an attraction, and it makes a restful pause between Halifax and Cape Breton. Walking is the main event. Riverside trails follow the Liscomb River through mixed forest, past rapids and great glacial boulders, while a fish ladder beside the water helps Atlantic salmon make their way upstream from early summer into autumn. A rugged coastal trail near the river mouth adds lookouts over the Atlantic, and the protected woodland is home to otters, beavers and plenty of birdlife.
The water is just as inviting. The river and harbour suit gentle paddling by kayak or canoe, and a harbour cruise gives a different view of the coast. Much of this is on the doorstep of Liscombe Lodge, the riverside retreat we use for stays in Liscombe Mills. Trails start close to your door, and the restaurant is known for planked Atlantic salmon cooked over an open fire.
Further along the Eastern Shore, Sherbrooke Village is Nova Scotia's largest provincial museum. This living history site brings 19th century rural life back to the St Mary's River, with costumed interpreters, a blacksmith and a sawmill driven by water. It opens seasonally, so we check timings when planning your route
