Forteau, Newfoundland and Labrador

The town of Forteau is located in between L’Anse au Chair and L’Anse-au-loop about 13 km northeast of the Quebec/Labrador border. Its name is derived from the French words meaning Strong Water.

Forteau is accessed by taking a ferry from Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula from St. Barbe to Blac Sablon. Once departed the ferry drive along Expedition 51º the Quebec-Labrador Highway driving through picturesque towns along to Forteau.

The communities that constitute the Town of Forteau are situated along the shores of Forteau Bay. The town is one of the largest in the Labrador Straits region. While the fishery is still an economic mainstay, other industries and businesses have developed in recent years.

There is lots of great walking trails across Forteau including The Overfall Brook Trail. This is a offshoot footpath which offers view of nature and the beach in Forteau. At Forteau Bay you may spot humpback whales, minke whales or maybe an iceberg.
