Fredericton, New Brunswick

Fredericton is the capital of New Brunswick in eastern Canada, on the St. John River. It’s known for its Historic Garrison District, an 18th-century British army base now home to artists’ studios and an outdoor theatre. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s Canadian and international collections are nearby. Just south, Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market sells seasonal produce and crafts.

Fredericton began as an Acadian settlement in the early 1700s, then grew when Loyalists arrived in 1783. It was named after Prince Frederick, son of George III, and became New Brunswick’s capital a year later. Today it’s a walkable, welcoming city, with the University of New Brunswick and St Thomas University adding a youthful buzz. The Saint John River runs through the middle, and locals make the most of it with riverside walks, cycling and paddling.

The city has a lively cultural calendar, from the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival to summer night markets and live theatre at The Playhouse. Odell Park and Kings Landing Historical Settlement are close by for forest trails and a taste of 19th century life. Summers are warm and relaxed, autumn brings colourful foliage, and winters are cold and snowy.
