Lexington was home to the first registered distillery in Central Kentucky, the Ashland Distillery (R.D. #1) later known as "Old Tarr." Built in the mid-1800s on Manchester Street, one of its warehouses still stands and is home to Manchester Music Hall.
In the 19th century, this area at the west end of Lexington was a major hub for Kentucky's Bourbon industry. Today, exciting initiatives are underway in the Distillery District utilizing historic buildings for shopping, breweries, restaurants, coffee shops, housing and entertainment venues. And of course, for distilling!
Within 35 miles of Lexington, Kentucky, you can enjoy tours and tastings at twelve working distilleries. Plan your own visits, or join Bottled in Bond Tours or Horse and Barrel Tours for one of their scheduled departures out of Lexington. A number of companies will customize tours that include transportation.
Beautiful horse farms have been part of the Bluegrass since the region was first settled, and so have horse farm visitors.
Early 19th-century travelers remarked on the beautiful country estates of the Bluegrass noting, as one put it, "a handsome horse is the highest pride of a Kentuckian."
When great 20th-century Thoroughbred Man o' War retired to stud in the Bluegrass, visitors from around the world flocked to see him. Man o' War's groom, Will Harbut, kept ledgers for visitors to sign. When Man o' War died in 1947, there were 63 ledgers containing over 1.3 million names.

There are about 450 horse farms in the region (about 150 in Lexington/Fayette County alone). They're all working farms- which means you should never just "drop by" - but more than a few allow visitors by appointment or through arrangements with professional tour companies.
True: Lexington is known as the birthplace of bourbon. But this is home to master brewers as well as master distillers!
