Hacienda Guachipelín

Cattle still graze the pastures at Hacienda Guachipelín, a working ranch in Guanacaste's dry tropical forest, about 25 kilometres northeast of Liberia. The steaming slopes of Rincón de la Vieja National Park lie right next door. Ranch life sets the tone here, with horses saddled for the trails and a simple, rustic feel that stays true to the hacienda's roots. Accommodation ranges from standard and superior rooms to suites and glamping tents, all with air conditioning and private bathrooms, and a lookout point with sweeping views across the countryside.

The real draw is what lies beyond the stables. Just down the trail, the Río Negro hot springs and volcanic mud baths are free for hotel guests, perfect after a day of riding, hiking or mountain biking. For something faster, you can zip line across the canyon on the Canyon Canopy tour or go tubing down the rapids of the Río Negro. In the national park, trails lead past bubbling fumaroles and waterfalls, with monkeys, deer and tropical birds along the way. At the end of the day there's the pool, the Simbiosis Spa and a choice of places to eat, from La Hacienda Restaurant, which is entirely gluten free and cooks with produce from the farm, to the more relaxed Cantina Guanacaste.
