Set in the forest on the edge of La Fortuna, with Arenal Volcano rising beyond the treeline, Lomas del Volcán is a place where the day starts with the deep, rolling call of howler monkeys. Guests stay in wooden bungalows rather than a main block of rooms. Each has two balconies looking out over the green slopes. Standard bungalows come with a king bed or two queens, while the deluxe bungalows add a private jacuzzi, ideal for a warm soak as the evening mist settles over the volcano.

The grounds are made for slowing down. Los Congos Trail is open only to guests and winds through the surrounding forest, where sloths, toucans and the resident monkeys are often easier to hear than to see. Back at the hotel there is a pool, jacuzzis, a spa and regular yoga sessions. Restaurant Hojarasca serves modern Costa Rican cooking made with local produce, and La Arboleda Bar is the place for a cocktail as the light fades. Hot springs, hanging bridges and waterfall hikes are all close by, but the setting here makes it tempting to stay put.
