El Calafate

On the shores of Lago Argentino in the heart of Argentine Patagonia, El Calafate is the gateway to one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth, Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the largest ice field outside Antarctica and Greenland. The town itself, named after the hardy purple berry that grows wild across the Patagonian steppe, has grown from a modest sheep farming outpost into a charming base for exploring the glaciers, with cosy lodges, log cabin restaurants and lively bars serving Patagonian lamb and fine Argentine Malbec after a day spent among the ice.

The undisputed star of the region is the Perito Moreno Glacier, a colossal wall of blue white ice nearly five kilometres wide and 60 metres high, and one of the few glaciers in the world still advancing rather than retreating. Sturdy walkways bring visitors face to face with its thundering calving, huge slabs of ice crashing into the milky waters of Lago Argentino, while boat trips offer an unforgettable view from the water itself. Further north, the remote and rarely visited Spegazzini Glacier rewards those who venture further, its towering ice face, the tallest in the park at some 135 metres, rising sheer from a narrow, fjord like channel that few travellers ever see. Together, these glaciers make El Calafate an essential stop for anyone drawn to Patagonia's raw, untamed beauty.
