British Columbia Self Drive Adventure

A self-drive holiday is one of the best and most exciting ways to spend a holiday in Canada. During my time exploring some of the best locations in British Colombia, I experienced memorable sights and contrasting landscapes while enjoying the freedom and flexibility to travel at my own pace.

Vancouver’s city centre attractions and the desert climate of Osoyoos offered the best of both worlds. As I travelled onwards, each stop on my self-drive tour allowed me to gaze at spectacular views, immerse myself in the history and cultural landmarks of the region, as well as sample fantastic local food and drink.

An urban adventure: Vancouver’s natural beauty and cultural gems

The journey through Canada began with an exciting landing in Vancouver, a city renowned for its stunning natural beauty and vibrant cultural scene. Known for its picturesque landscapes and bustling urban life, Vancouver provided an excellent start to my adventure. Highlights included exploring Granville Island, famous for its public market, artisan shops, and galleries. The island is a hub of activity, where locals and tourists alike enjoy fresh produce, unique crafts, and waterfront dining. A leisurely walk through Stanley Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America, offered breathtaking views of the city’s skyline, serene forest trails, and the iconic seawall. The park’s totem poles and the scenic drive along the park's perimeter were particularly memorable. The day ended with a welcome dinner featuring local cuisine, setting the stage for the adventures ahead.

Osoyoos: Deserts, vineyards and stunning views

The next leg of the journey took me on a scenic drive to Osoyoos, a small town in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. This drive showcased the diverse landscapes of British Columbia, from the coastal beauty of Vancouver to the arid desert climate of Osoyoos. Along the way, I made a refreshing stop at Bridal Veil Falls, where the impressive 60-metre waterfall cascades down a rock face covered in lush greenery. The short hike to the falls was invigorating, offering a perfect spot for photographs and a brief respite from the drive.

Upon arriving in Osoyoos, I checked into the Spirit Ridge Lake Resort Winery, a luxurious resort situated on the sacred land of the Osoyoos Indian Band. The resort offered stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and Lake Osoyoos, blending luxury with cultural heritage. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and warm temperatures, making my stay even more enjoyable. My time in Osoyoos included a cycling tour of the Kettle Valley Railway in Penticton. This scenic route, with its gentle 2% gradient, provided spectacular views of Lake Okanagan and the surrounding vineyards, making it a highlight of the trip. Cycling through this picturesque landscape was a serene and invigorating experience, allowing me to appreciate the region's natural beauty.

Nelson: Victorian charm, good food and local brews

Next, I journeyed to Nelson, a town known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture and vibrant arts scene. En route, I visited the Doukhobors museum in Castlegar, which showcases the heritage of the Russian religious sect that settled in the area. The museum provided a fascinating insight into the lives and traditions of the Doukhobors. Upon arriving in Nelson, I spent the evening enjoying local craft beers at Torchlight Brewery and dining at Marzanos on Baker Street, where the combination of good food and local brews made for a delightful evening.

Revelstoke and Golden: The perfect mix of arts and outdoor experiences

Revelstoke was the next destination, offering a mix of outdoor adventure and cultural experiences. The drive to Revelstoke included a quick coffee break in Nakusp, a charming town nestled between mountains and lakes. The short ferry journey from Galena Bay to Shelter Bay was a scenic highlight, with calm waters and beautiful mountain views. The thrill of the day was experiencing the Pipe Mountain Coaster at Revelstoke Mountain Resort, an exhilarating ride that offered stunning panoramic views. The weather continued to be in my favour, with clear skies providing perfect visibility. After checking into Sutton Place Hotel, I explored the vibrant Art Alley, part of the Luna Arts Festival, which showcased local art installations and performances. Dinner at Craft Bierhaus rounded off the day with hearty food and good company.

Golden was my next stop, where I explored the Golden Skybridge, Canada’s highest suspension bridge. The bridge offered breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, providing a thrilling and picturesque experience. The town itself is home to the longest free-standing timber-framed pedestrian bridge in Canada, which spans the Kicking Horse River. Walking along this impressive structure was a unique experience. Dinner at Eleven22 provided a taste of the local culinary scene, featuring fresh, regional ingredients.

Radium Hot Springs: A relaxing end to a memorable journey

The final days of the journey took me to Invermere and Radium Hot Springs. I started with a visit to Panorama Mountain Resort, known for its excellent ski slopes and summer activities. Lunch at Cliffhanger at Greywolf Golf Course offered stunning mountain vistas, making for a memorable dining experience. The highlight of the day was the ATV tour to Paradise Mine with Toby Creek Adventures. This exhilarating tour took me through rugged terrain and historical mining sites, offering spectacular views and an adrenaline rush. The good weather continued to bless my trip, with sunny skies enhancing outdoor adventures. Arriving in Radium Hot Springs, I checked into the Prestige Radium Hot Springs Resort. The hot springs, located within Kootenay National Park, provided a relaxing soak in mineral-rich waters – a perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.

My journey concluded with a drive to Calgary, where I reflected on the diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage experienced throughout the trip.
